Microsoft offers a third preview of the Xamarin iOS Simulator for Visual Studio

This week, Microsoft released a new preview build of the iOS Simulator for Xamarin on Visual Studio. Announced at Microsoft’s Build 2016 developer conference, the iOS Simulator in Visual Studio allows Xamarin developers to preview their iOS apps on Windows, which is a pretty big deal. Previously, they needed a Mac, even with cross-platform development tools. The new build is version 0.9.2.25. Here’s what’s new: Interestingly, the page links to release notes, which includes another list of known issues.

Google Docs, Sheets get iOS 9 split screen (finally)

Google Docs (left) and Sheets (right), happy together. Many iPad users (including me) have been complaining for a while about the slow pace of progress by Google in supporting iPad productivity features in Google’s iOS apps. Today brought some great news. Updates to Google Docs and Google Sheets add split-view multitasking to those apps at last. This is a big deal for iPad users. Now it’s possible to update a Google document or spreadsheet while also viewing Safari or using any other multitasking-capable app you can think of.

$200000 for a serious iOS bug? Pfft, we’ll give you $500000, says exploit broker Exodus

Last week Apple made its belated entrance into the bug bounty market, announcing a top award of $200,000 for major flaws in iOS, but Cook & Co have been comprehensively outbid. On Tuesday, exploit trading firm Exodus Intelligence said it is willing to pay $500,000 for a major flaw in iOS 9.3 and above – and the exploit to use it. Researchers can either take a lump sum or accept a smaller sum and quarterly payments until the exploit is found, which the company’s founder told The Reg could add up to even more.

Kantar Worldpanel: iOS gains market share in the US during Q2, Android slips slightly

Kantar WorldPanel released its second quarter market share report today, and it showed that in the U.S. iOS rose 1.3 percentage points. That means that the Apple iPhone was responsible for 31.8% of smartphone sales in the country from April through June. Apple had the top selling device in the U.S. during that period as the Apple iPhone 6s and Apple iPhone 6s Plus combined to snag 15.1% of U.S. smartphone sales. Not far behind was the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with a combined 14.1% share. The Apple iPhone SE was third with 5.1%.
